Food of A Different Kind

Dec. 19, 2006--Cesar Flores, a supporter of our broadcast ministry in Chile, bakes bread for a living. When the 1997 earthquake hit Chile, he packed up his baking supplies and spent five months in the devastated area, baking bread for those who lost so much. “I gave out physical bread to those in need, but I also gave them spiritual food,” Flores commented. His acts of kindness earned him national recognition in Chile.

Rev. Guillermo Serrano, Spanish ministry leader for The Back to God Hour, heard Flores’ story at a December 2006 communications workshop for radio and TV producers and station managers in Santiago, Chile. Flores traveled seven hours by bus to attend the communication workshop, which Rev. Serrano organized for local leaders whose stations broadcast The Back to God Hour programming.

Flores told Rev. Serrano how he and his wife felt God calling them to take their portable baking wagon and travel from their home in Monte Patria to bake bread for those left homeless by the earthquake. The tremor hit areas where most of Chile's population lives. The devastation left people not only injured and hungry, but frightened as well. So as Flores and his wife distributed the fresh bread, they told people about the God of all comfort.

Flores’ experience opened doors for him to share the love of Christ in continuing ways. Before the earthquake he hosted a local radio program on a small station in Monte Patria. His radio program, Radio Valentia, expanded to four hours and is aired daily over a commercial station, reaching people in a 50 Km perimeter.

“As ‘dessert’ I play La Hora De La Reforma [The Back to God Hour’s Spanish language radio program],” Flores informed Rev. Serrano.

“Cesar is a small man in stature, but he has an incredible heart,” observed Nancy Ayala, assistant to Rev. Serrano. “We were so impressed with his story.”
