Food Distributions Take Place in Haiti

"Thank you for your support and your prayers," wrote Jenny LeMahieu of Christian Reformed World Missions after monitoring some of the hurricane relief programs going on in Haiti.  At the time of her report, CRWRC had been able to distribute $40,000 worth of food aid to families in need.

This distribution took place through CRWRC partner churches in communities across the country. At each location, pastors and deacons met with families to determine need. Recipient families were then asked to come to the church or pastor’s house on a certain date to receive a one-week supply of food.

“While the two Pastors and the secretary went to go purchase food, I walked around with two members of the church to visit the area and see some of the damage,” said LeMahieu about one of the distributions. “One home had water literally dig a channel right behind it, separating it from the hill, with two places where the water broke through the concrete walls, filling the home with about 2 1/2 feet of water.  They praised God that they were at church while this happened, so their children weren't swept away or drowned in the water.  Other homes had the roof blown off, or walls washed out.  I was glad to see that many of the neighbors were taking care of people who had homes damaged.  The community there seemed to be helping each other out as much as they could.”

Despite the success of these food distributions, there is much more work to be done. In addition to requiring on-going food aid, many places lost everything and now need to rebuild homes, replant fields, and get businesses back up and running. Please continue to pray for Haiti as its people work to rebuild their lives.
