Sea to Sea Registers 100th Cyclist
October 26, 2007—The Sea to Sea 2008 Bike Tour reached a milestone this week, registering its 100th rider for next summer’s cross-continental cycling adventure.
Rick Gritters, of Pella, Iowa, was the 100th applicant and the 86th to register for the entire nine-week, 3,700-mile trek from Seattle to Jersey City. So far, 14 more have signed up to ride one section of the route since that option became available earlier this month.
With the final registration deadline still three months away, the Sea to Sea tour is well on its way to becoming the largest group of cyclists to ever cross North America.
“What’s most exciting is the impact these riders and their supporters will have on ending the cycle of poverty for so many around the world,” says Paul Holwerda, a member of the tour’s organizing committee.
Funds raised through the tour will support projects and programs aimed at alleviating poverty locally and globally and breaking the cycle that keeps individuals and whole communities poor.
All 100 cyclists have a profile page online with their bio and a link to receive donations. In the vast majority of cases, these cyclists have cited poverty-alleviation as one of the key reasons for their participation.
“This is something that I’ve wanted to do for several years,” states Doug Lutke, of Dorr, Michigan, who will ride sea to sea with his wife Joy. “When the opportunity came to make this ride with other Christians, and help the poor at the same time, it just seems right.”
