Good Giving No Capital Gains Tax

April 2007

Tom and Mary have real hearts for those in need. One way they are responding to Jesus’ words to care for the poor is through their support of CRWRC. It is important to them that CRWRC is working with people experiencing real need, and that CRWRC is helping people help themselves. They value CRWRC’s approach of building-up local Christian organizations, and appreciate the wisdom conveyed in the phrase, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime”. And as a retired business owner, Tom also appreciates CRWRC’s financial management – donations are getting to the people in some of the world’s poorest regions with little being taken up for administration and public relations.

Given Tom’s experience as a businessman, he looks out for opportunities to make his gifts go as far as possible. He learned that the Canadian government recently eliminated capital gains tax on gifts of publicly traded securities that have appreciated in value. Tom had invested some of their savings in securities. He realized that if they gave these to CRWRC all of their original investment, and all of its increased value, could be used to make real changes in people’s lives - instead of part going to pay tax on the increase. While looking into giving a gift of securities, Tom also learned about the services of Christian Stewardship Services. CSS is a registered charity that works with CRWRC and other charities to provide free, confidential advice toChristians on financial planning. All it took, Tom said, was two phone calls and filling out one form.

Tom and Mary’s choice of supporting CRWRC provided them with a win-win-win. By giving a gift of appreciated securities they were able to eliminate the capital gains tax on their gift; Tom enjoyed working with CSS and is likely to use their services again in the future; and most important, Tom and Mary are able to extend a helping hand to those in need through their support of CRWRC.
