In recent days we have been shocked and saddened by the escalating violence that is being unleashed against fellow Christians in North Africa and the Middle East.

We weep with our brothers and sisters in Egypt, who are mourning the killing of 21 Coptic Christians by ISIS. We pray for the safety of more than 100 Christians kidnapped by ISIS in Syria. And we pray for the victims of violence in Nigeria, Niger and elsewhere.

We in North America are at risk of becoming callous to the atrocities of conflict and terror, since we are reminded daily of persecution of Christians and humankind's great propensity toward evil. We're also tempted by hopelessness, given the immensity of troubles the world is facing.

As people of hope, let us stand with our fellow Christians around the world. During this season of Lent, let us remain focused on the Word and on prayer, confident in the power of the resurrection.

In the words of our Contemporary Testimony:
As followers of Jesus Christ,
living in this world—
which some seek to control,
and others view with despair—
we declare with joy and trust:
Our world belongs to God!
