Seminary's Avila Named 'Remarkable' Professor

February 13, 2014

The website Theology Degrees Online has named Calvin Theological Seminary New Testament professor Mariano Avila as “a remarkable role model for current theology students who aim to become educators.”

Avila teaches in the seminary’s distance-learning program that began in 2012.

Although Avila is listed as number nine in the northeastern region on the website’s list of 100 “theology professors and scholars theology students should know about,”  the website says this is not a ranking.

Rather, the professors and scholars “are categorized by the general region of the most recent institution they taught at.”

Theology Degrees Online is a website that aims to provide prospective students with a single online resource for finding information about theology and the various degrees offered in this field.

“We strive to provide objective, unbiased, and accurate information pertaining to this course of study. We also offer a large catalog of accredited schools that offer different types of degrees and programs focused on theological studies,” says the website.

Avila has served as pastor of six different Presbyterian churches throughout his career. He’s also worked as an integral part of the Biblical Translation Committee that has produced a Bible translation in contemporary Spanish.

Also on the website list are such educators as Francis X. Clooney of Harvard Divinity School; Scot McKnight of Northern Baptist Theological Seminary; Samuel K. Elolia of Emmanuel Christian Seminary, and Kathleen Russell of the Seminary of the Southwest.

Of its list of 100 remarkable professors and scholars, the website says:

“The professors and scholars mentioned here have not only contributed to the body of theological knowledge with their research, but they have also contributed to the preparation of a new generation of theologians.”
